Re Venables on Dabo not being "politically correct." (a thread)
The following is based on my recollection/observation. The idea of politically correct/politically incorrect emerged in the early 90s, as a way to ridicule changes to language to be more inclusive. 1/x
So, for lots of folks, because of stuff like this, and Bill Maher, etc, the idea that calling people what they want to be called is silly and stupid became normalized. 3/x
The idea of "political correctness" then morphed into a way for (privileged white) people to justify doing things that were wrong by claiming they were simply being "politically incorrect." "I know it's politically incorrect, but I love my mink." 4/x
From there, the term somehow morphed into another sense where "politically incorrect" meant something like "contrary ro popular wisdom." IE "It may not be politically correct, but Attack of the Clones is my favorite Star Wars movie." 5/x
This last sense is what Venables is referring to in terms of Dabo's decision to rank OSU lower than other coaches did. But. 6/x
Given Dabo's history w/ team baptisms and talk of player entitlement, it's a bad look, in that the "freethinking" connotation carries the weight of the other senses of being "politically incorrect." 7/x
The stakes for this are high, considering how important the concept of "politically incorrect" is to Trump's rise. "He's not ridiculing a reporter w/ a disability, he's just politically incorrect." 8/x
By this logic, Trump's not being racist when he calls Mexicans racists, or denies Muslims entry to the US, he's just not worried about being "politically correct." 9/x
More generally, I will always stop class if a student uses the phrase, and talk about what it does and does not say. When you use this language you are renouncing making a moral decision of your own in favor of your perception of what other people think. 10/x /fin
