just came across this about Anandibai Joshi: Her husband Gopalrao taught her science, math, english, marathi and was a vocal proponent for women’s education. He wrote a letter requesting assistance to facilitate his wife to study medicine in the United States. 1/
A Presbyterian minister stationed in India saw Gopalrao’s letter and got it published in the “The Missionary Review.” The replies, both published in the journal’s same volume after the letter, reflect their hope that the Joshees will first convert to Christianity.
One reply further discourages the idea of Anandibai coming to the United States, arguing that the couple should remain in India and preach the gospel there.

(basically same cheap ricebags that preach about equality want to help only if they agree to convert to christianity.)
Before leaving India, Joshee gave a public speech where she spoke about the issues societal resistance she faced. She promised to face difficulties with greater courage. With regard to people’s suspicions of her faith, she pledged to leave as a Hindu, and to return as a Hindu.
