THREAD: I know I have a ton of proportional representation enthusiasts in my twitter-sphere, so I wanted to remind you that @SpringtideCo and @fairvotingbc are making the LEGAL case that first-past-the-post doesn't give voters fair and equal representation. #ERRE #cdnpoli #peipoli
They have filed a notice of application against the Attorney General of Canada, claiming that the first-past-the-post voting system violates the section 3 and section 15 rights guaranteed to Canadians in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. View it here: https://d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net/springtide/pages/1738/attachments/original/1570629858/2019-10-09_-_CC4FV_-_NOA_FILING.pdf?1570629858
We have secured affidavits from four expert witnesses who have crafted evidence in support of the claims made in that filing! You can read a summary of the first affidavit by Dr. Nadia Urbinati here https://www.charterchallenge.ca/court-case-update-fair-voting-nadia-urbanati-challenge-canada-springtide-bc-20200812. Summaries of the others coming early 2021!
The impact of our electoral systems have been front and center in Canada with lopsided electoral outcomes from coast to coast, and with the electoral college south of the border. If you're mad about the way that voting systems can impact electoral outcomes, this case is for you!
The Charter Challenge for Fair Voting is completely donor-funded and we need you to bring this case through to completion. We have secured matching donations until the end of December, and anyone who gives $25 or more in a year will receive a charitable donation tax receipt.
We're going to be hosting a webinar for donors with our lawyer in the new year that you won’t want to miss! This is where you can get into the nerdy, electoral weeds about the case and the affidavits! If you donate any amount to the case before then, you'll be invited!
So many of us have been working on this issue for YEARS and have been through multiple campaigns, referenda, plebiscites and consultations to no avail. This case is another way to make the argument that we need a voting system that fairly represents Canadians.
So, if you care about electoral reform please consider supporting this case any way you can. If you are able to donate, you can do so here: https://www.charterchallenge.ca/donate-cc?utm_campaign=year_end_matching_do&utm_medium=email&utm_source=springtide. If you're not able to donate right now, please consider liking and sharing! Every bit helps.
