It was another 4-2-3-1 for Rodgers, with Praet in the hold & Mendy/Choudhury as the DM’s.
A fairly pragmatic #LCFC midfield, that did create good chances - which was pleasing (although, a lot of these were facilitated by the wingers/full-backs).

Palace’s defensive block was narrow, Rodgers consequently asked #LCFC to rotate the ball from side-to-side, forcing Palace players to press out of the block, and creating pockets through the lines to progress play.
This was very effective during the first-half.

There was a clear focus to switch the play for two main reasons;
a) the space was in the width for #LCFC,
b) make the ball do the majority of the movements - which is essential when playing lots of football in succession.
This stagnated slightly in the second-half.

Thomas was again utilised as an inverted full-back in possession. This allowed Barnes to be found deeper - from the CB’s - and Thomas would add an option centrally, whilst also helping Barnes (via one-two’s) - highlighted with the penalty win.

Quite often, Mendy/Choudhury would both sit in the cover shadow (behind the Palace player) when #LCFC’s CB’s had possession. This forced play through the full-backs.
One of the DM’s needs to offer for the ball goal-side of the press - something Tielemans does.

Pérez is very effective in the press, he rarely commits to a tackle without winning it. He’s a smart footballer, outlined by his ability around-the-box/in tight spaces.
Today wasn’t one of his best outings, but he’s a good, with a different profile, player for #LCFC.

A fruitful avenue of attack was playing wide into Justin, who holds his width and allows an underlap (Praet in the half-space).
Converting these chances is an issue from the runners, who all attack the six-yard-box (same space) rather than the penalty spot.

When arriving in the box, #LCFC’s decision-making needs to improve.
Offering for the ball needs to be varied (i.e. a player in the six-yard-box, a couple of players around the penalty spot, and on the edge), to give the crosser more options with the ball.

As a team, #LCFC are very easy to counter-press.
We seem reluctant to spread the play away from the danger when we receive the ball from a turnover. Instead, we force play into the area we’ve just won the ball (with defenders already there covering passing lanes).

Schmeichel will be frustrated with the goal. Letting a narrow angle shot beat you at the front-post isn’t good, but Tielemans doubling up on Benteke gave Zaha the space at the back-post.
Overall, it was an exceptional finish, rather than an #LCFC error, imo.

Barnes’ goal was exceptional. His ability to create the shooting opportunity within the limited space he was awarded, whilst striking the ball cleanly on his weaker foot - is top-class.
Two goals, both with his left, in two games (a very, very good talent).

A long with his ball manipulation to create the chance, his strength to hold off Milivojevic is very impressive.
It’s worth noting, Vardy’s on-the-shoulder movement created the space in the hole for Barnes, whereas Iheanacho would’ve operated in that specific space.

Evans was brilliant today. Playing alongside an “uncomfortable” Amartey at CB, Evans had to control the line.
His reading of the game was faultless, intercepting balls into the forwards - neutralising Benteke’s involvements. He also carried/progressed play very well.

Thomas was also great. Much better as a LB, than a LWB, he offers consistency in possession in the final third.
I’d like him to take a few more risks, like the run for the penalty, but that will come with game-time.
He’s still seems slightly reserved in possession.

The narrative that #LCFC were poor is wrong. Very good in the first-half & Palace were better in the second (when compared with their first). The balance of play probably levelled to a point/maybe three for the Foxes.
The result doesn’t always equal the performance.

Our finishing let us down today, whereas Palace’s got them a point. We had a plethora of chances, with most of them ending high & wide.
It seems like a “snatching of the opportunity” mentality at the moment, rather than instinctively finishing the chances - confidence.
