recently, there has been a resurgence in the #cancelexams ‘movement’ - promoting the cancellation of exams in favour of CAG (with no given alterations to the CAG that were provided in summer), and providing 0 alternatives ! why is this a problem ? (thread)
firstly, we have known for a Long time that CAG are going to hit BAME - especially black - students the hardest. this has been often reported in the mainstream media, so it’s common knowledge - and should be essential if you’re trying to run a movement

if you’re supposedly against the current education system, but you’re employing a false absolute binary which consists of either scrapping exams completely or just having exams without any other provisions then you’re following the school of thought of the literal establishment
which is to do what serves a certain groups interests & is completely disregarding the countless articles and media and content from people who have been talking about the dangers of what they’re proposing for months.
this letter by @RunnymedeTrust proposes a lot of alterations to ensure fairness and equity, which this campaign has not even brushed upon - despite it being widely available https://www.runnymedetrust.org/blog/predicted-grades-bme-students-letter-to-ed-sec
seeing a so-called ‘movement’ regarding supposedly bridging inequality develop without any actual nuance for how what they’re proposing would further marginalise is terrifying, and it’s scary that actions to protects people’s own interests can be disguised as social justice
i do agree that the current system is not fit for purpose, but the alternative being proposed is self-serving, unambitious and narrow. it might be okay for eton boys ( where grades were ‘inflated’ ) - but it won’t be for ordinary state school black kids https://www.itv.com/news/2020-08-14/ofqual-forced-into-downgrades-by-implausible-teacher-predictions
if exams are going to be cancelled, then so should the racist system of CAG that this group are promoting ! alternatives are widely available - but being deliberately ignored
