Honestly you can understand a lot about institutions like the Southern Baptists by what they are always freaking out about.
I grew up when it was constant talk about “the gay agenda”. Yes, let’s talk about the agenda of people who literally have zero rights or prioritization in our society as if they are scary political superpower determined to strip rights from other people!
Or in Bible college I got the tail-end of “postmodernism will end all Truth as we know it.” That’s so interesting coming from groups of people who consistently engage in conspiratorial thinking and echo chamber ideology in order to not engage with the realities of others
Now it’s critical race theory. Which is rich coming from people who systematically have promoted a white supremacist patriarchal framework into every element of their theology, pop culture, and history. Very much on purpose, and tied it to Christianity!
“The gay agenda” was people begging for rights.
“Postmodernism” was people questioning the bounded sets of modernity and the gatekeepers who determined “Truth”.
“Critical Race Theory” is people being honest about how white supremacy impacts every element of our culture.

And honestly the saddest thing to me about all of this is that all of these “worldview problems” that Christians freak out about stem from marginalized or hurting people raising serious concerns about how dominant culture Christianity has hurt them.
I can’t stop thinking about what our world would look like today if we as Christians took these concerns seriously. Conservatives are right in one regard—so much would change if we did that. But I think it would be towards imitating Christ.
I know this is going to make some of you feel mad at me, or disappointed, or like reaching out to me to see if I have considered the other side—the traditional dominant culture side. I’m going to ask you to just sit with your discomfort a bit.
Sit with it. Sit with other people’s pain for as long as you can stand it, and consider letting it change you.
And: make sure you are prioritizing the pain of those you never heard about growing up. The pain of those often vilified in our Christian spaces.
