0/ HYSTERIA KILLS

Amazing WSJ article casually describing how hospitals got hysterical in March, stopped following known protocols, and contributed to the spike in March/April deaths.

Haunting title: “Hospitals Retreat From Early Covid Treatment and Return to Basics”

But the subtitle tries to spin it:

“Changing practices, based on data and experience, appear to be improving outcomes for the sickest coronavirus patients.”

“Changing practices,” though, actually means they stopped freaking out & are going back to good, standard practice.
2/

“Last spring, with less known about the disease, doctors often pre-emptively put patients on ventilators or gave powerful sedatives largely abandoned in recent years.”

Hysteria kills.

“Now hospital treatment for the most critically ill looks more like it did before the pandemic. Doctors hold off longer before placing patients on ventilators. Patients get less powerful sedatives.”
4/

“Let us go back to basics,” stated Dr. Eduardo Oliveira, government med director for Introduction Health Central Florida, which recommends its medical doctors persist with pre-pandemic tips for ventilator use. “The less you deviate from it, the better.”

Hysteria kills.

“We were intubating sick patients very early. Not for the patients’ benefit, but in order to control the epidemic and to save other patients. That felt awful,” states Dr. Iwashyna, a critical-care doctor at UMichigan and Dept of Vet Affairs in Ann Arbor.

Read that again.

What’s so bad about putting infirm patients on unnecessary ventilators?

Ventilators can injure lungs by inflicting an excessive amount of pressure. ‘We’ve got gag reflexes that are pretty hard to go away, precisely to avoid things going into our lungs,” Dr. Iwashyna stated.

And the push for unnecessary, non-standard-practice, ventilators also endangered the patients’ lives because intubated patients require higher levels of sedation, which itself raises the chances of death.

Why would doctors abandon standard practice and essentially experiment on their patients?

Because the hysteria in March led the world to believe with 100% confidence that COVID19 was unlike any virus ever. https://twitter.com/MarkChangizi/status/1285177755114639367?s=20

Much of the spike in deaths wasn’t from COVID19, but from the irrational actions of a society that had fallen into a mass delusion.

Misery and deaths from lockdowns are themselves, at their origin, also hysteria deaths.

Hysteria is who killed 2020. https://twitter.com/MarkChangizi/status/1239995212572876802?s=20

And that hysteria was so strong it left much of the world in a mass delusion that is still with us. https://twitter.com/MarkChangizi/status/1339282595394297860?s=20
