I watched a wonderful talk by @abbyfuller this morning that helped to put some things into perspective for me about how folks in tech, who’ve been around longer, feel about and treat the younger/up and coming generation of techies.

I was recently thinking about a young women I know who is doing a great job at positioning herself as a leader in her space. She is unconventional, powerful fearless, and brave and magnificent! She’s dope.
She’s a bit younger & still has that fire within her. I started to feel a certain type of way like - “yeah, I’d never say/share that..blah blah”
And then I caught myself and how I was feeling. Perhaps I wished that I were that fearless. That I were that brave & unfuckwithable

And then it hit me. Our role, as folks who have been in the space longer/senior in their career, is not to dictate how younger in career folks do their thing, or even why, or whether they are focusing on the “right” things....
It’s also not to expect they do it our way.

It is also not to pass judgement on their unconventional methods, or question how knowledgable they really are in their respective areas.
Our role is to support them w/o judgement.
To nurture their curiosity & fearlessness.

So the next time you see a young techie doing their thing, before you tweet or respond angrily, or even if you don’t respond, feel a certain way, pay attention to that & why you feel it.
