Pixar's Soul is a garbage ass movie and I'm finna tell y'all why. I guess I should put a SPOILER warning here but since I'm telling you not to watch it anyway I really shouldn't have to right?

These first tweets are going to be about the plot ok? Ok..
The main character is an unfulfilled music teacher longing for a career as a jazz musician. His mother disagrees. He goes and tries out for a spot in a band anyway, gets the gig, then falls down a manhole on his way home

This brings us to my first issue with the movie: our main Black character ceases to present as a black person at this point in the film. Just like Tiana in Princess and the Frog.
The message that this sends to little white children is obvious right? Like I don't really actually have to explain this right? I'm just going to assume y'all get it...
Anyway our man finds himself in the "great beyond" (that's literally what it's called) and finds that he's going to be transitioning into the Afterlife, but because he doesn't want to die without feeling like his life was meant for something, he runs and tries to escape
He then finds himself in a place called the "great before" (that's literally what it's called) where souls prepare for life on Earth. In order to get back home he makes the decision to pose as a trainer for one of these unborn souls
It is at this point in the film where our main character quite literally becomes a magic negro in his own movie.

You see folks because this young soul doesn't really believe that there's a reason to go to Earth and live. He's a cynic, and so our main character takes it upon himself to try to literally give this character who is a figurative soul, a literal "soul"... Get it???
This unborn soul needs to find her spark in order to get her motivated about a life on Earth. she has a tool that can help our main character get back to Earth and once he helps her she'll give it to him.
As you can imagine our main characters attempts at giving this soul a soul prove to be mostly in vain. The soul then takes our main character to a place for lost souls. They then meet someone who says he can help our main character after they learn his fall resulted in a coma
At this point our main character is excited and his whole effort is really done. He tries to make the transition back to Earth and then BAM! The soulless soul comes too and then BAM! The soulless soul enters the main characters body, and our main character soul jumps to a cat.

So now our main character and the soul inhabiting his body leave the hospital. The soul really likes being in the body and take some time to really get herself comfortable. After some self-discovery that our soulless soul finds in the MCs body the soul police show up.
But now that our soul is soul has found some joy and purpose she doesn't want to give up our main characters body. After a seemingly climactic confluence, our main character finally gets his soul back in his own body, and the soul is soul disappears into the lost souls place...
Now the movie should end here but of course our main character feels bad about the whole thing so he ends up playing some notes on his piano to get himself back up into this strange purgatory in order to find the souless soul and help her really find her purpose.
He eventually succeeds but in the act of helping this other soul he ends up expending his own personal soul meter and prepares to literally go and die.
But of course the soul police and the people who run purgatory see what a good person he is and what a good thing that he did for one of their own and so they offer him his own fucking life back. He gladly accepts and the movie ends.
So what's not to hate? Our main character becomes a ghost. What does that remind you of?
Then after he becomes a ghost to becomes a cat. He's black for about a quarter of the movie all around. And outside of his love of jazz, there's nothing really black about this movie

He's supposed to be finding his purpose and getting his life but he spends the majority of the movie helping someone else find their purpose and get their life and even after that person invades his body and abuses it for their own gain he still finds it within himself to help.
He's never given any real agency, the only thing that we ever really know about him is that he likes music and wants to be in a band. But we delved so deeply into the emotions and the complexities of the soulless soul character, we empathize and sympathize with *her* not the MC
Then at the end after helping this girl out he literally walks off to die. He's only allowed to come back to earth because of all the work he put in helping someone else. He was only as valuable as much as he was useful to them.
Black character is in these types of movies are never actually allowed to be black. the little white children who watch these movies will never get an understanding of the black experience they won't see our struggle they won't care about our perspective and our opinions because
If they watch this they won't even think we're real.
So yeah don't watch this movie, don't let your children watch it. I'm definitely someone who roots for everybody and everything black but this ain't it.
