We’re in a dangerous situation where the gvt and opposition parties want to open schools next week despite rising cases and knowing full well that schools were the main driver of the 2nd wave. Some have suggested mitigating measures to make schools safe. But you can’t make 1/
schools “Covid secure”. At my school we did everything we could: “bubbles”, one way systems, increased ventilation, air purifiers, staggered lunches and start and home times, more cleaners and cleaning and regular hand washing. But none of these measures worked 2/
Staff and students were catching the virus on a daily basis and being sent home. Christmas couldn’t have come fast enough. Masks you say? You’re living in cloud cuckoo land if you think primary schools kids are going to wear masks properly all day. What about lunchtime? 3/
There are 11M children in education, many of whom travel by public transport and live with 3/4 other people. That’s exposing half the country to the virus, many of whom could be vulnerable or shielding. 4/
Let’s just er on the side of caution and give every kid a laptop. Schools have learnt a lot and have become much better at teaching remotely. And when schools return the kids can keep their laptop. Don’t tell me the gvt can’t afford that. They’ve just spent 14B on weapons. End/
