Today is the day! We start vaccination of our #nursinghome residents. It feels like beginning of a new era. #vaccines #COVID19
Follow up on vaccination efforts for residents in LTC-
Few residents who refused or were deferred for later-
All vaccinated, no immediate reactions, one redness around the injection site.
Vaccination is an interdisciplinary effort. Preparation is everything. #vaccination #ltc
Find date of vax and walk backward in the process.
1. Identify communicators- ideally people with preexisting rapport with families- ours- MDS coordinators
2. Get FDA fact sheet for the vaccine for recipients and @AMDApaltc Vaccine FAQs, talk through pts for decision making.
3. Start calling families the week ahead- you will have some who will not be able to call back timely.
4. Document vax assent - consent is not required- but doc of communication is imp.
5. Plan for the day of vax - STAFF EXTRA- with staff who can observe res post vax.
6. Look over the FDA EUA info- get info on common post vax effect- common effects are common. Plan for remedy of the common effects- protocols? (We did)
7. Anaphylaxis is RARE- but be prepared- we made anaphylaxis E-Boxes and kept it on our vaccine carts.
8. Educate yourself and staff on what anaphylaxis looks like. @CDCgov has doc-
9. Don’t distract staff with unnecessary busywork like vital signs monitoring- instead ensure that staff knows to took and observe common effects and uncommon allergic reactions.
Go over the process if there are any effects noted. Immediate intervention and communication cascade.
10. Vaccination cards scanned after first dose into the electronic chart. (MR)
And I know that we have a rockstar team! #covidvaccine
