A Priceless gem depicting 'Nidhi Chāla Sukhamā' krithi from Tyagayya movie based on the life of St. Sri Tyagaraja directed by Bapu.
Let us go to the background a little bit and come back to the exposition of this wonderful event of his life.
Tyagaraja always had an unwavering devotion to Lord Rama who never cared for any materialistic thing in his life unlike his elder bro Japesam who was always intersted in making money out of magic, astrology and all sort of such things.
Japesam often used to loose his cool over his young Tyagu whom he felt was not enough productive and wasting his life singing meaningless praises on Lord Rama. Meanwhile Tyagaraja gets famous in and around Thanjavur and his fame reaches till the king's court of Serfoji.
Serfoji belongs to the Thanjavur Maratha dynasty. Asthan Vidwan of the king's court Sri Sonti Venkataramanayya who recognised the talent of Tyagaraja(kid) made him his student and nourished him musically. As a kid Tyagaraja often used to accompany his father Sri Ramabrahmam in
giving discourses on Ramayana at the king's court. Now coming back to the scene as Tyagaraja gets famous all over, his guru Venkataramanayya wished that his sishya sing at the Sangita Vidwat sabha who went deeper in the aspects of music than his guru.
Eveyone in the concert hall were awestruck at his brilliant composition 'Endaro Mahanubhavulu Andariki Vandamulu' (Salutations to all those great men in this world!!) *This later becomes a very popular rendition in the Karnatic world a very commonly used phrase among Telugus*
everyone in the hall insists that Tyagaraja be honored by the king to which Tyagaraja refused as he didn't care any praise. Coming back to home he gets scolded by his brother for rejecting the proposal of those vidwans.
probably Tyagaraja was not having any idea of the most important litmus test he is gonna face in his life now. After a few days the king who was mesmerized by the literal and devotional qualities of Tyagaraja's compositions desperately wanted to meet him. He then sends many gifts
,gold and money to his house through through the administrators. This one thing makes him super famous all across the princely state of Thanjavur. Many people could recognise the inherent talent in him, pay their respects and approach him with their gifts. Meanwhile Japesam and
his family couldn't believe the king himself had sent many gifts to their house and feels how wrong were they when they despised the highly respected Tyagaraja by the public all across the state.
Japesam and family overexcited at the sight of those umpteen number of golden gifts started praising Tyagaraja for bringing Goddess Lakshmi to the poverty ridden brahmin household. Everyone looks were at Tyagaraja feeling tensed what decision would Tyagaraja take on this wealth
The Administrators said to the over excited family members of Tyagaraja that they could enjoy this wealth only if he says yes. Everyone feeling tensed, lots of expectations and what not. And then a moment of silent errupts.
Tyagaraja then sings ''Nidhi Chaala sukhamā Ramuni Sannidhi seva sukhamā??nijamuga balku manasa nidhi Chaala sukhamā?''
Is wealth a greater pleasure or is service in Rama’s presence a greater pleasure? Answer me truthfully, O Mind!.
He then goes on saying the following in his vernacular telugu
Are curds, butter and milk more tasty? or is the nectarine essence of meditation on and bhajana of Dasaratha’s son more tasty?
Is a bath in the Ganga of self control and tranquility more comforting? Or,
is a bath in the well of evil sense-objects comforting?
Is extolling(praising) of humans fettered in egotism comforting, or
is singing on the pure-minded Lord Rama praised by Thyagaraja comforting?
His distaste to worldly affairs was clearly visible. His unwavering mind on Rāma couldn't really accept materialistic favours given by mortal kings who extol themselves as the Lord of lords. On whom Tyagaraja should have sung praises. He was not at all interested then he simply
says to those king messengers 'Am not interested in anything except serving the holy Rama. Those were the days when rejecting kings and their favours as sedition. Unbothered abt all these Tyagaraja went in his way
As one expects Japesam and co who were overexcited at the vast wealth were naturally furious. Japesam who all of a sudden forgot all the animosities he had at his younger brother Tyagu for disobeying his materialistic outlook on life couldn't bear the fact that they will be
octracized by the town people. Now Japesam unable to bear the humiliation starts meting the worse of treatments to Tyagaraja. He disowns Tyagaraja, dissolves all sort of relationship with Tyagaraja and his family.
Worse is everyone refuses to pour bhiksha to him which he received then till date. Gradually everyone distanced themselves from him. His tears on the holy feet of Rāma's deity satisfied his hunger when he had no food.
Why did all this happen to the Samrat of Rāmabhakti Samrajya? Well only Rama can answer this. The popular perspective over this is each and every true devotee of lord Rama had to undergo this. Why so? Is it that Shiva gets easily pleased over his devotees and Shri Hari puts an
umpteen number of tests on his devotees? Nothing that sort. It's just all part of the divine play kindes hearted Shri Hari. Like Shri Hari liberated Gajendra from Huhu a crocodile, Rama here liberated Tyagaraja from all sorts of Bhavasagarās(worldy concerns)
so that Tyagaraja who was his(Rama's) child could reach him at the earlier best. Neither Rama couldn't bear his child staying away from him who was lost amidst Bhavasagarās. Yes he was his child because Tyagaraja himself proclaimed Rama and Sita as his mother and father in his '
Sitamma Mayamma Sri Ramudu Maadandri' krithi (SItamma is our mother and Sri Rama is our father). Even in the case of Gajendra the crocodile who caught him was a case of Bhavasagarā. Gajendra wanted to swim across the ocean of Samsara but the crocodile was catching him.
Now Tyagaraja is happily residing with his Lord in Vaikunta ❤️
Truly a 'Nidhi Chala sukhamā Ramuni Sannidhi seva sukhamā' moment ❤️❤️Tyagu's heart is truly an emperor heart but of Rāmabhakti Samrajya
