As a journalist on the centre left, I’m routinely attacked for writing articles about foreign policy for Conservative outlets, from people with no understanding as to the purpose of why I write at all - to build a consensus in order to affect progressive policy change.
So I ask all of you this, what is the point of me pitching articles about Hezbollah or the war in Syria to Jacobin, Tribune et al? The editors hate me, the tiny audience hates me, and nobody who will read it there will have any interest in policy that challenges their worldview.
Writing for mainstream centre right publications doesn’t make me a Tory, it makes me someone who is seeking to build cross-party, bipartisan consensus to better protect innocent people in foreign conflict zones.
That can’t be done by trying to appeal to the humanity of people whose worldview is often sympathetic to the dictatorships involved in those conflicts. Sorry, but that’s the truth, & when the editor of Jacobin is publicly justifying the execution of children, you know I’m right.
I don’t agree with the Conservative government on much, but I recognise that they govern the country, and that if I want to use my platform to have a positive impact, I need to talk to the people in charge, not waste my time trying to convince Maoists to stand up for human rights
And, every time I publish for a centre left outlet like the New Statesman, because it’s equally important to me to reach those on the mainstream centre left, I have to lock Twitter for the day because of the abuse sent to me and the outlet for allegedly publishing a known heretic
It’s tiring to me but I’m done justifying to people online something that genuinely needs no justification. I earn a living off pitching articles and getting paid for writing them, and I choose the outlets I think will give me the best platform to reach people.
If you have a problem with that, you can just as easily ignore the entirety of the mainstream centre left and centre right press and get all your information from partisan opinion pieces published in Breitbart or Novara Media, nobody is forcing you to read my articles. Peace
