this is a reach, but i think we get very upset by cases of identity imposture because it messes with our sense that people have to be grounded in the facticity of their lives and cannot just be whatever they imagine, and it's
especially galling when it's a rich or otherwise privileged person, because they are already less tied to the brute circumstances of life than the rest of us: it's immodest to have both means and great pretensions
We especially resent those who try stay in a kind of perpetual childhood for their entire life and play make-believe, we spend considerable energy trying to bring them back down to earth
I don't necessarily think that that's bad; I share the annoyance, I also think there is something existentially unseemly about living in cloudcuckooland, but we all do it to some extent and those who don't are in their own type of despair which is maybe worse
I tend to like people who are at least somewhat grounded, they are more funny because a lot of humor lies in bringing things back down to earth
