Just caught up with super-middleweight prospect David Morrell’s fight this weekend. He’s talented but far too raw to be fast tracked the way he is at the minute. Here’s a thread breaking down his game, which me and @craftyboxing took a look at last week.
We immediately noted that he’s much more concerned with setting up power shots than your typical Cuban slickster - Morrell has good power, and is more willing to throw in combination compared to his peers. There’s a few issues with this, though.
He has a bad tendency to square himself up when he’s throwing in combination, which is made further problematic by the fact that his head movement is inconsistent. When he’s on the edge of range and focussed on it, Morrell’s head-movement is fine. But when he’s letting his hands-
- go, it becomes an afterthought and his head stays on centre-line too much. Sequences like this are far too common; Morrell fails to punctuate his attack with any defensive techniques (e.g. proactive head movement or initiating the clinch) and stays static, which leaves him -
