1/5 IMHO 1 of the hardest things about holidays as a consultant in the nhs is they aren’t really holidays. Work is still being generated for you, referrals are still made, patients still call, results are still emailed, mdts still happen, investigations still occur,
2/5 I rack up 300+ emails a week and that doesn’t really reduce, you need to double or treble up your on call to cover shifts you swap and colleagues holiday. No one takes care of that work for you, essentially only a part of your work load gets cancelled when you go on holiday.
3/5 It makes switching off very difficult. That anticipation of how much you will have to come back to.....
With the exception of Christmas bank holidays - with the whole country stopping that elective work disappears.

4/5 I’ve had 25 emails in 4 days, compared to 210 in the Mon-Thurs before. It’s made it so much easier to relax and switch off. How do we replicate that at other times of the year? #MentalHealthMatters
Should email accounts be locked so they can’t receive mail when on holiday?

5/5 Or would it be easier/preferred to give 1-2 extra non clinical days on the return from a holiday block to allow you to catch up on that extra work? #burnout How do we make this better? Is it just me? What’s your experience?
