Families of some 20M girls are expected not to send their girls back to school after the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving them more vulnerable to child marriage.

A thread on 2020's impact on women and girls:
Both parents and cutters have taken advantage of girls staying home during pandemic-driven school closures in many countries to carry out female genital mutilation (FGM)
Stay-home orders during Covid-19 turned domestic violence into a “pandemic within a pandemic”, exacerbating a deadly crime in which 1 in every 4 women are abused by intimate partners at least once in their lives
Women are paid less, face more layoffs, have less access to capital and, if they are from marginalised groups, have fewer rights, making it harder for them to financially cope with Covid-19, an unprecedented crisis.

We look at women’s economic insecurity in 2020:
Yemen’s new government has zero female representatives for the first time in 20 years. Women make-up half the world’s population but continue to be under-represented, with 172 of 193 countries led by men
