Yudhishtira (Y) LONG THREAD. The common perception today about Y is that he was an impractical man that staked his own wife in dice. Y is my most favourite character of Mbh and I always love talking talking about his lofty character.
He is 2nd only to Rama as a king.
Y personally never revealed any of Duryodhana's conspiracies against Bhima in his teens to King Drtarashtra. As a prince and a teen and a heir apparent, his kshama guna is something we all should learn from.
He goes to the forest of Varnavata knowing about the conspiracy Drtarashtra and his sons had planned. He spoke not a word against him as latter had supported his Father Pandu. Yogis always look at that the +ves one does for them and ignore the -ve. Here 2 he is 2nd only to Rama.
Krishna helps Y for the Rajasuya. And once Y subjugates whole of India with all its wealth, he says unto Krishna, 'Take it all and become the emperor yourself as only you made this possible for me'. He was ready to hand over the entire empire without hesitation.
After the Rajasuya, Vyasa tells him how he will be the sole reason for the entire fall of Bharatavarsha. Y w/o hesitation decides that his death is better than this. Having just become the emperor it was nothing to him. He was advised against suicide by his brothers.
Y who never censured any1 his whole life viz when bhima was poisoned, plan of Varnavat, he was ousted from Hastina, his wife disrobed; first utters 'chi' at Dury, only when he, a Kshatriya was rendered unable to feed the broms that followed him to the Vana, as he lost all wealth.
He decided to foresake his own brothers with whose strength he can get back the entire kingdom just because his mother Madri would require a son on earth to perform tarpana every month. (Yaksha prashna)
Anrshamsyam Parama dharmaha.
He changed his mind about Karna when he knew he was his elder brother. He never showed animosity even by thought towards the one who called his wife a prostitute. He grieves when he finds Karna in hell. He says he would've foresaken this kingdom if he knew the fact about Karna.
In Vanavaasa, he orders Arjuna to save Dury from the Gandharvas and chastises Bhima for rejoicing over Dur's misery. Because Banumati (Dur's wife) requested Y to help. He couldn't refuse the request of his dear brother's wife. He never thought once about what Dur had done to him.
He forgives Jayadratha who misbehaves with Draupadi just because he did not want to widow his dear sister, Dushyala, daughter of Drtarashtra. Who thinks with such magnanimity today? Y is the embodiment of detached loukika. Second again only to Rama and Janaka.
He prostrated at the feet of Drtarashtra everyday when he was the king (after the war).
Drtarashtra was a man busy plotting Yudhishtira's death, every day, every night. Such sense of morality is not possible today or in the days to come.
Best for the last.
After the Virata war, Virata elated at his victory (he didn't know Arjuna was the one who fought), calls Y for a game of dice for which Y refuses.
Virata throws the dice at Y's head and Y bleeds.
Draupadi (Sairandhri) fetches her pallu to collect the blood.
She says to Virata, 'If this man's blood falls on the ground, your Vamsa would become ashes. There is no man nobler than Yudhishtira on earth.' This man staked her on dice!
Can there be a better testimony for Y's greatness? Thus I feel we shouldn't judge him abt dyuta incident.
Well what's the fruit if one person is like this? Well he ruled entire Bharatavarsha for close to 50 years and even God voluntarily put himself under such an emperor's command for even he knows there is no one better than Yudhishtira.
