Tbh I feel like the Democratic Party gets a ridiculous amount of irrational hate #onhere. The party has generally been positive for marginalized people for the past half century. But there are real political and societal constraints that they had to operate within.
The left critics of the Democratic Party—at least the ones on Twitter—typically make the claim that the party doesn’t fight hard enough for left policies. But reality is the problen isn’t *effort* the problem is the electorate, in which there is still a sizable % of conservatives
Leftists love to say a majority of Americans prefer left economic policies, & its “Dems fault” Dems don’t basically every election. This is purposefully dishonest (or ignorant) of the fact that social conservativism (anti multiculturalism) is stronger than economics for many ppl
And even most people aren’t as economically left leaning as people on here describe them, state referendums on single payer have failed. Nimby voters constantly block low income housing in the most liberal cities in the country.
Black voters, the most consistent Dem voters, overwhelmingly elect moderates to represent them in House Districts.
This is not even talking about the political constraints (like the rural state senate bias) or societal constraints (media and cultural centers biased towards median white perspectives) that Dems must contend with.
Democrats passed Civil Rights and ever since have championed rights for marginalized peoples. Poc in blue states generally have more worker protections and state aid available than those living in red states. Dems have done a lot for representation of marginalized ppls as well
Which is why the Democratic Party does so well in the popular vote in Prez elections. The party has won 7/8 of the last popular votes, unprecedented in US history. This doesn’t happen if everyone hates the party.
Is the Democratic Party perfect, of course not. Activists have a role in pushing the party and fighting for new policies and ideas. But the idea that the Dem Party is widely unpopular, out of touch, or elitist is just complete nonsense. The people who believe it are out of touch
