Beetles!
It's been fun posting threads for #InverteFest so how about some friends from the land of Coleoptera that I found this year?
Oriental Beetle (Exomala orientalis)
This beetle was one of my favorite finds this year. The art-deco markings really stood out and I just stopped when I found it. Turns out this is a species of longhorn beetle.
Gray-winged Neoclyt Borer (Neoclytus scutellaris)
I found many boring beetles this year too.
Red-necked Cane Borer (Agrilus ruficollis), (Anthaxia viridifrons), and the dreaded Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis). Wasn't sure about the Ash Borer when I found it, had found the other green borer earlier.
These leaf beetles were always doing push-ups.
(Sumitrosis inaequalis)
A fiery find in the spring and summer meadow is the Dogbane Leaf Beetle. If you're taking photos of these friends try it without flash. They are very shiny!
(Chrysochus auratus)
No common name for this one, but it is another handsome beetle I found this year. The first time I saw it, it flew away. Second time was a charm.
(Disonycha pensylvanica)
Fireflies are beetles! Multiple species are in this photo. For example, the fireflies making the J-shaped flash are male Common Eastern Fireflies (Photinus pyralis).
Tortoise beetles are interesting in that they have an expanded hard shell and can hide under their armor just like a tortoise.
(Mottled Tortoise Beetle Deloyala guttata)
Weevils are beetles. With that long rostrum these bugs always struck me as the Snuffleupagus of the insect world. We found this stylish weevil in Ecuador back in February. I don't have a good ID for this one. 🙁
I'll wrap this up with one of the most beautiful beetles I have ever seen - the blue skeletonizing leaf beetle. Skeletonizing means they eat around the veins in a leaf leaving just the leaf skeleton behind. Ecuador, Feb 2020
(Macrohaltica sp.)
