The Barbara Cook Kennedy Center Honor Tribute aired 9 years ago and it is the greatest thing that has happened to my life. It is Broadway leading lady royalty and class at its finest. All dedicated to Barbara Cook. Here are my favorite moments from this perfect tribute A THREAD-
Having Laura Osnes who represents a new generation of star ingenues start the tribute singing “This is All Very New to Me”. Inspired symbolism. Also a sensible 32-bar cut. Not too long, not too short, all she needs is a light blanket.
Rebecca Luker entering with the richest, healthiest, most effortless voice in the land. The “Will He Like Me?” accompaniment working beautifully with “Will I Ever Tell You”. Not to mention Rebecca’s subtle emphasize of “yes” 💆🏻‍♂️. A masterclass of acting through song.
Kelli O’Hara walking downstage very, carefully, sounding like an angel. The both of them singing songs that ask a question in shimmering gold dresses w/ no sense of competition. & Kelli’s last note. Always that last note. Always that placement. Always that straight tone into vib.
Glenn Close absolutely not singing the correct rhythm but who cares bc she’s acting her ass off.
Also that portamento down to “my”. Also she’s a baritone?
Ending w/ a cutaway shot to Anne Hathaway having a literal orgasm and nervous breakdown in the audience *chef’s kiss*
Sutton Foster coming in with pristine diction while being queen bee to a bunch of hunky chorus boys. Her smile to one of them during “I say sail”. The orchestrations during “I insist on miracles”. The look of satisfaction on Sutton’s face bc she absolutely owned this performance.
Patti LuPone using her body to nail the syncopation of the rhythm (“happy together is”). The cutaway to Meryl looking like she’s about to pull out a vibrator & have a ball. The chorus boys dancing their perfectly toned asses off. Also Patti’s voice is INSANE in this. Wow wow wow.
Audra McDonald deservingly as the finale, coming in center stage, parting the Red Sea like Moses. Again the cutaway to Meryl probably wondering why her tribute wasn’t as good as this one. Audra’s voice. The “tell me”. The spin on “sweet”.
All the other actresses on stage looking at Audra (and each other), supporting one another, being in awe of one another. The reveal of the orchestra and choir in “Make Our Garden Grow”. Barbara’s tears forming. Audra’s mic on full blast as it should be. This whole damn tribute.
I’m so glad this tribute was televised for all to see. I think leading ladies are incredible. In one of the most competitive industries, to make a career out of it never ceases to amaze me. This tribute showcases some of the best of the best. It’s so special to me & many others.
