MY TOP 10 RAP ALBUMS OF THE YEAR (A THREAD):
2020 has undoubtedly been a bizarre year, but one thing that has stayed consistent has been music. There have been too many amazing albums to fit into a single thread, but this highlights my personal top 10 favorites, with a few extras.
HM’s:
Black Habits -D Smoke
Manager on McNichols -Boldy James
Better -Deante Hitchcock
Circles -Mac Miller
From a King to a God -Conway the Machine
Seven times down eight times up -Elzhi
The Allegory -Royce Da 5’9”
10: Man on The Moon 3 -Kid Cudi
The 3rd installment to Cudis legendary trilogy did not disappoint. This album is full of amazing psychedelic beats, and slick hooks from Cudi. The features are amazing, and it provides a perfect addition to the narrative of the Man on the Moon.
Favorite track: Tequila Shots
9: Limbo -Amine
Easily Amines best work, this album provides infinite entertainment value. The rapping is much improved from previous projects, and the features all hit. Not only is this his best production wise but he shows a vast improvement in songwriting.
Favorite track: Burden
8: Burden of Proof -Benny the Butcher
Benny reaches a new level of quality with burden of proof. Every flow is impeccable, and every feature fits perfectly. The beats fit Benny perfectly and give him a fitting space to rap over.
Favorite track: One Way Flight
7: As God Intended -Che Noir
This was the first album I heard from Che Noir and I was blown away, what a starting point. Her lyrical ability is among the best in the game right now and the beats from Apollo brown are flawless. I really look forward to hearing more in the future.
Favorite track: Hustle Don’t Give
6: Run the Jewels 4-Run the Jewels
How are El-P and Killer Mike improving at this point in their careers? Seriously, this album is phenomenal. The beats are as hardcore as ever and the politically charged lyrics were perfect at the moment of release.
Favorite track: Walking in the Snow
5: Streams of Thought Vol 3 -Black Thought
Black Thought has legitimately never not been in his prime. From the day he started this dude has been special. This album is no different, every verse not only well written, but his flow is mind bogglingly fun to listen to.
Favorite track: Fuel
4: The Price of Tea in China -Boldy James
Boldy James had quite the 2020. He managed to release 3 high quality rap albums, with TPOTIC being the best of the bunch. The dark beats from alchemist match Boldy James cold flow marvelously. Also the vivid imagery from Boldy always hits
Favorite track: Run Ins
3: Unlocked -Denzel Curry and Kenny Beats
I liked this album to begin with, but it has grown on me a ton. This is really two musicians at the top of their craft just having fun with it. The beats are funky and Denzel knows just how to rap over them. The punchlines never get old.
Favorite track: Take it back
2: No Pressure -Logic
As a pretty big Logic fan, this album has a special place in my heart, as it represents Logics comeback. I love everything about this album, from the hilarious bars from Logic, to the production from No ID.
Favorite track: Dadbod
1: Alfredo -Freddie Gibbs
This album is simply too good to not be my 2020 album of the year. I spent a long time going back and fourth between this and No Pressure, but I decided on Alfredo. The Alchemist again provides amazing production, but this time in the form of-
-gorgeous luxurious beats. Freddie is really at the top of his game on this album as well. We get a variety of introspective cuts about his motivations, and then some typical Freddie braggadocio. The use of samples and strings give this album such a beautiful feeling every time.
Favorite track: Skinny Suge
