I might be wrong, one always can be, but I think people will be surprised how quickly #Brexit collapses.
The reaction against #Brexit will bring a lot of opportunities for reform of our outdated political institutions that should be seized by progressive voters and parties.
We’ll need a constitutional commission to develop a programme for fundamental reform. We need to ensure we never have fptp voting again, never again a plebiscite on fundamental constitutional issues with no requirement for clarity or a significant majority.
We need a written constitution. We need an elected second chamber. We need reform of funding for political parties, reform of our press ownership laws, regulation of internet companies, reform of regional and local government. And reform of education.
We also need provision for greater federalism with clear pathways to independence for Scotland and Wales and reunification for Ireland. And we’ll need membership of the EU’s SM and CU. And ultimately we need to reapply for full EU membership.
And then we can begin to have a normal politics about all the important things: not least reducing economic inequalities, providing welfare, protecting minorities, protecting the environment and securing the full gamut of human rights.
