Since a lot of people on mcyttwt seem to be new to online art communities, i thought I'd compile some things that may SEEM harmless but you probs shouldn't tweet in response to someone else's art (aka a thread with some explanations)
Note: i definitely dont speak for ALL artists, as we all have our own comfort zones! The vast majority of these are rooted in MY OWN feelings in reguards to comments ive seen/received (/nm)
"OMG I thought this was [other character] for a second lol"
While YOU may love that other character and think youre comparing one amazing thing to another amazing thing, it can be a gut punch to be told your art looks like something it isnt :(. Please avoid comparing likenesses

"This reminds me a lot of [well known artist]"
Please never compare an artist's work to someone else's. We're all trying to make names for ourselves out here! Even if that other person is INCREDIBLY talented, direct comparison can breed a lot of insecurity and self doubt.

"oh shit i thought this was a [screenshot/photo/edit]"
This one is more specific to redraws rather than original works. I KNOW this one is almost always intended to be a compliment, but it doesnt always feel like one, especially with how common blatant colour dropping can be. 1/2

Whenever someone implies my art 'looks identical to the original', i feel like I've failed to create something new and interesting. I believe I put a lot of myself into my work and would prefer people to acknowledge the unique bits rather than just the similarities, y'know? 2/2
[ vague reactions without tone indicators ]
"/pos" is a very very helpful indicator, please use it when you're saying something positive in an indirect way! Things like "whyyy" can be great under angsty art, but a /pos lets us know its a GOOD emotional response and not just hate

[ Quote rts, !!ESPECIALLY!! If your account is set to private ]
I personally don't mind these, but i cannot understate how often i see fellow artists fret about this. QRTs often feel like a more socially acceptable way of reposting someone else's art for your own gain bc — 1/2

— it steals interaction away from the artist and towards your own tweet. Twitter made this less-bad by making it easier to keep track of QRTs, but if your account is set to priv artists have no way of knowing if you're complimenting their art or slandering it. Its stressful. 2/2
"Are you going to draw ____ too?" / "I wanna see ____ next!"
Please don't say this unless you're close friends or if the artists is explicitly asking for ideas, otherwise it puts the artist in an uncomfy position. If you REALLY want to see an artist do a specific thing, pay them!

"omg what if instead you _____" / "I'd like it better if _______"
Unless an artist is VERY EXPLICITLY ASKING FOR FEEDBACK, DO NOT OFFER IT. Period. Its like if a stranger walked up to you and said you'd look better with a different haircut. Like wtf. It's incredibly impolite.

"I would SO buy this on a shirt!"
If you want to know if the artist has an etsy or redbubble for their art, DM them about it! But DO NOT ASK BELOW ART! There are instances of bots using tweets like this to find and steal art for their own profit. Not good. https://twitter.com/ambientrise/status/1343271193776947201?s=19

These are all i can think of off the top of my head, please lmk if you think ive missed anything major
Also, don't beat yourself up if you've done any of the above! Fretting over the past is never constructive. Just try to be more aware of what you say in the future (/pos /nm)

Ooh boy this got more traction than i was expecting, so id just like to further clarify that absolutely NONE of the examples above are incredibly harmful by any means. These are just things that may make some artists go "
" when your intention were "
"

I just wanted to bring attention to how flippant ppl can be when commenting under art without fully considering how the artists may read into what they're saying. What may be some off handed comment to you could easily be something that artist thinks about all day. Be gentle!
