Does anyone else get the sense that we're all playing economic and political Calvinball? That no one really knows the rules anymore & we're all flying blind?

No one knows if deficits matter, what money even is, what political constraints are, what social media is doing to us? /1
Political arguments are increasingly just chaotic shouting past one another. Not just because people are living in different info environments, but because no one knows the rules.

Can we run a zero interest rate environment forever & give everyone a UBI? Who knows! Whee! /2
We're simultaneously in an era of radical economic profligacy, & immiserating scarcity. All the money is going to the rich. Clawing it back is very hard, & even if we succeed it just goes toward paying down deficits which apparently...don't matter? Not to Republicans, for sure./3
And apparently the guardrails of democracy are broken, too. Trump bent the presidency to him, not to the other way around. Brazil's prez says vaccines will make you a vampire and no one has deposed him. A mafia state is running massive hacking ops worldwide with no consequence./4
Facebook is bigger than any world government, they can change elections with minor flips of the switch, and they and other "free" social media companies are letting a virulent conspiracy cult spread worldwide virtually unchecked, and we're just...watching it happen? /5
We decided to turn houses into an asset commodity and explode their prices upward in the space of a generation while simultaneously limiting building new housing, and no one stopped to ask what would happen to the NEXT gen or if this would be a wise experiment. Wheeeee! /6
Meanwhile, let's kill off stable low-wage work and raise cost of living so low-wage work can't pay the bills. And then let's make getting an education to get higher-wage work ludicrously expensive! If you try to fix it, it's simultaneously elitist *and* socialist. Fun! /7
Then let's have everyone live in nuclear families, send them to college and jobs away from extended family, then make raising kids ludicrously expensive. Did I mention we inflated the cost of housing, & incentivized empty nesters to stay in large houses? Fun experiment! /8
Do you have a hard time explaining where money comes from? Why we even have countries anymore? How Gen Z will afford to have housing or families without a revolutionary social collapse? How politics works when brain hack heroin tells millions that 5G spreads COVID?

I sure do.
I feel like we thought we understood where the road was, where the guardrails were, & it was just a matter of what side of the road we drove on. Even battles between communism versus capitalism fit within the road.

I don't think anyone knows where the road even is anymore. /end
