I'm still contemplating with horror the almost celebratory tone of that NYT article about a girl who said a foul word when she was *freshman* in high school and had her admission to a university rescinded three years later. Is this really the world we want? @RichardHanania
Unlike the girl, who said a stupid word in a video ignorantly, the boy who posted it *deliberated* about his behavior for three years, calculating that he would go public with the video when it would cause maximal harm to the girl. This is the behavior we are incentivizing.
Many of the people who will thrive in this environment are cold, calculated, and callous. They will manipulate the consciences of the morally fervid and settle scores and petty grievances by humiliating others and provoking disproportionate mob punishment.
Kids will be kids. But I can't for the life of me imagine what the adults at these universities are thinking when they revoke admission to a student who said a bad word *three years earlier.* It's crazy. It's vindictive. It's superstitious. It's illiberal. It's chilling.
