I've been thinking about Rep. Deb Haaland her extraordinary achievement becoming the DOI secretary. It dawned on me this morning I've never had a Native doctor, a Native colleague (outside Indian country), a Native therapist, dentist etc. 1/2
I wonder how it would feel to walk into a doctor's office & not have to explain certain things, be laughed at because of my height (standard for being Pueblo) or be suspected of being a diabetic or an alcoholic drug user or being met with skepticism about pain or being a runner.
I have so much positional privilege. If I'm in a place where people know my job, the interaction is different. The parts of me that make me the best version of me are met with suspicion and derision. I grieve for my brothers and sisters.
