Working in cybersecurity does not make you an expert at computers, networks, or all things Tech. It is a Tech-related career but you yourself decide what niche to specialize in based on your unique interests. There are many different levels of mastery as with any profession.
I have a friend who also works in cybersecurity. I'm in my 40s, he's in his 50s. I've been at this computer security stuff for ~25 years but he's been at it for 30+ years. He's a software engineer & cybersecurity pro. I chose him to be a mentor b/c he knows a lot more than I do.
Whereas I have a solid understanding of how computer systems & networks function as well as many other aspects of cybersecurity, my friend understands the code behind it all that makes it work. He's been an egghead building his own home cpu lab way longer than me. #GiveRespect
It's funny, he's told me in the past that when you get to his level with the programming abilities he has to be able to conduct code review as part of cybersecurity. His starting salary starts with the number 2. He is wicked smart & a very humble & interesting guy to talk to.
The old saying about never being the smartest person in the room is true. You've got to find or follow people who know more than you in order to expand your knowledge & so that they can help guide you along your chosen path while making your own way. This is the way.
