We don't really need Long Term Care homes. If we understand aging & disability as inevitable, we must restructure society to fund: accessible homes, full attendant care, all meds/assistive devices, proper palliative care etc. Without this, we're coercing families into separation.
I say this to say that the call to nationalize long term care homes isn't exactly a solution. It's continuing to build false legitimacy around the idea that to be cared for, disabled people must be sent away. We need to honestly ask why many people consider LTCs their only option
The answer is usually a lack of access to *something*. Money, staff, time, medication, etc. All things that could be restructured...if our governments chose to seriously value human life over profit/productivity
