Stan culture is one nightmare I haven't gotten to understand. I really want to read an in-depth psychological analysis of why people lose their sense of self-awareness, and even morality because of a public figure. It is too pervasive.
One theory I've found convincing is that stans project their identities to those figures so as to make the figures an extension of themselves. Defending the celebrities, seems just like defending themselves – yet the celebrities still retain those god-like status in their minds.
