I think the real issue our leaders were hard at work trying to resolve this year is how to ‘manage’ the crisis while suppressing questions like this one

A successful virus mitigation strategy would have been ultimately disastrous for the system - people who benefitted from one act of competence will want to see more of the same. The horror.
The disabled community raised a brow earlier in the year when companies seamlessly transitioned to WFH, previously considered an unimaginably burdensome ‘perk’ that justified shutting disabled ppl out of employment.
$600+UI gave some workers a taste of life at a living wage and, *shocker* buoyed the economy when the country was under the strictest wave of lockdowns until it ran out in July.
Calls from even centrist politicians for free covid testing and treatment as a public good started raising questions like “hey so why should *any* health issue justify personal bankruptcy?”
We are on the cusp of asking much bigger questions that we’ve been asking in decades and that’s the big problem leaders are solving rn- how to perform enough leadership to get the masses to shut up and get to work w/o triggering more awareness, much less action.
In this scenario being accused of incompetence, stupidity, n greed is actually a plus - ppl who get disillusioned and distrustful will withdraw expectations, creating a playground for corruption to run wild while ppl huddle in atomized silos.
If I wanted to screw the country over for my benefit it would be a dream come true if most people just wrote me off as a bumbling venal moron. Whatever these people are it’s definitely not stupid. Covid could have been contained just by copying other countries’ homework.
