LA County has 70 ER-equipped hospitals. On Christmas Day, 2019, 33% (23-of-70) diverted patients to other hospitals due to overcrowding.

This Christmas Day, 96% (67-of-70) had to divert, leading to wait times of up to 8 hours for ambulances to offload patients.

A nightmare. /1
LA County:

Hospitalised: 6,770
ICU: 1,354
Official ICU capacity remaining: 0%

That's licensed capacity, whereas they have surge capacity of 160 beds, and in cases that involved moving general ward beds into gift shops or putting up tents outside, to repurpose wards.
To get a sense of scale of what's going on in LA, these would be the equivalent numbers in Ireland, by population.

Hospitalised: 3,300
Daily admissions: 350
ICU: 670
Daily deaths: 75
California is also dealing with a complete disaster in Nursing Homes.

As did every other place that experienced a 14-day incidence above 750.0 per 100,000 (e.g. Belgium, Tennessee).

In last 7 days, 2,520 Nursing Home residents and 1,640 Staff tested positive in California.
It has been proven everywhere the virus surged in the community beyond critical levels, that it is impossible to prevent endemic Nursing Home outbreaks at that point.

That's one big reason to do everything feasible to avoid reaching those 750.0+ per 100,000 incidences.
Ireland are not out of any woods.

It would be trite and delusional to believe we are a special exception, where this type of surge couldn't happen.

This virus will reach those levels if we allow it to, so individually and collectively, we can't let that happen. #StayAtHome
