YOU CANNOT be “cleared” for a gathering by a negative COVID test

1) Might be too early in course to detect virus
2) ~20% of tests are false negatives
3) You could become infected literally 0.1 seconds after your swab

Sincerely,

An increasingly desperate ER doctor https://twitter.com/DerekMonetteMD/status/1343047189317132288
The purpose of this tweet is to point out:

1) Negative test is not a free pass
2) If you are gathering, please still wear masks
3) Quarantine + negative test reduces risk further
While I have you here, a brief aside on my limited experience with the COVID vaccines and anaphylaxis/severe allergic reactions:
We are seeing a small number of patients present with anaphylaxis after the COVID vaccine

Some have an allergy history, some do not

Fortunately, we have a GREAT, successful treatment for anaphylaxis - for COVID, not so much
All of the patients with vaccine anaphylaxis I’ve seen/heard of have recovered either in the ER or after a night in the hospital

Again, many COVID patients are not so lucky
In summary:

1) COVID vaccine anaphylaxis is rare but can happen

2) We are seeing it in those with and without allergies

3) Vaccine anaphylaxis (unlike COVID) is extremely treatable - often not requiring hospital admission
Seeing some fear in the replies about going inside for vaccination. This is understandable for people who have been completely locked down.

For those of us who have been working indoors/seeing COVID patients, we generally feel safe with appropriate PPE.
Indoor vaccination should be very safe with appropriate masking and distancing, but this is a good reminder to public health professionals that drive through vaccinations may be key to convince some of safety.
Seeing story after sorry on here of people who tested negative when they first had symptoms before later testing positive.

One of the largest studies found a 38% false negative rate on day 1 of symptoms. Almost a coin flip.

Stay smart & safe!!

Wanted to clarify a typo in the original tweet-

1) 20% of negative tests (not of all tests) are false negatives on day 8 of symptoms

2) On day 1 of symptoms 38% (THIRTY EIGHT PERCENT!!!) of negative tests could be false negatives
