Some gyan on Bollywood.

It was the metro crowd which made SRK and Amir khan superstars.Even Salman Khan, but Salman still had a large following among poor urban Muslims in small towns and villages.SRK and Amir didnt have that appeal among lower class small town Muslims.

Doesnt mean that their movies flopped in small towns, the metro momentum and popularity propagated through media channels made the movies hits in small towns too.

Hindu superstars whatever we had were made stars by small towns post 90s- Sanjay Dutt, though for short time,Sunny+
Deol, Ajay Devgun,Sunil Shetty,Akshay during Khiladi series days etc.

Sunny Deol and Ajay Devgun momentum was carried forward by non-metro crowd.Another reason why they didnt use to get media glare and attention like the metro made Khan heroes.

Eg- Lagan-metro vs Gadar-towns.
Ghayal vs Dil
Ghatak vs Rangeela
Indian vs Dil Chahta hai.
Ziddi vs Mohabbatein
etc.
Same with Ajay Dvgn movies like Platform,Jigar,Diljale, Sangram,Vijaypath,Najayaz, etc which were small town hits mostly.

Exceptions on both sides exist.
Not to forget, the other Hindu superstar Mithun Chakrabarty whose 90s movies catered mostly to Bihar UP population and did quite well-just like Emran Hashmi used to do well in metros.

Some of Mithuns superhits and average hits catered to small town-Cheetah,Jaahil,Gunda etc.
