Academics and "scientists" cannot reconcile the fact that the rest of society does not share their view of the world, or their ambition.
The fact that people do not share their view of the world becomes an "atrocity" on their view.

They have to construct a demonology and mythology to explain their failures -- to belittle people outside their consensus.
Consequently, Annan tries to claim that Brexit is a crime against the young, committed by the old. He knows better the interests of the young than their parents and grandparents do. He knows better than democracy.

And *that* is why people vote for Brexit. And for Trump.
