#CrystalPalace’s #Goalkeeper #Guaita dropped an effective decision making & 1v1 strategy masterclass yesterday which I think went unnoticed due to the games score line & the fact he conceded 3 goals but he saved a massive 5 1v1s against #AstonVilla

When #Watkins dribbled past the last defender #Guaita had time to rush out & try to engage the ball but he instead chose to stay deep & treat the shot like a non1v1 & given the angle & distance of the shot my model predicts this was the optimum decision & helped him make the save
When #Grealish got in 1v1 yet again #Guaita had time to rush out but again he knew given the distance & angle of the 1v1 his best bet was to wait deep & treat the shot like a non1v1 shot & again my model suggests this was the optimum strategy & contributed to him making the save
When #Watkins got in 1v1 again #Guaita again knew that given the distance of the 1v1 & the fact there was defensive pressure from behind that waiting deep & not potentially selling himself by rushing out was the best bet & again this helped make the save straightforward for him.
He didn’t just save long range 1v1s When the ball fell to El Ghazi ~9yrds from goal #Guaita knew he couldn’t wait deep as he wouldn’t have enough reaction time to make the save hence he rushed out & formed the premeditated block position which left no gaps for El Ghazi to exploit
His final 1v1 save was an extremely close range one & he did incredibly well in a split second to jump forwards off his line & form a closed leg spread in front of the #AstonVilla striker which completely snuffed out the shot & forced the striker to “just hit the ball at him”.
Saving 5 1v1s in a game is some achievement but what’s even more impressive is the fact he also gave himself the best chance of saving all 5 1v1s according to my 1v1 model.
