Day 289 #ArtKicksCovid19 “Landscape with the Rest on the Flight into Egypt” (1647) Rembrandt van Rijn. @NGIreland On hearing that a new ‘King of the Jews’ had been born, King Herod ordered the slaughter of all male children under the age of two in Bethlehem.
An angel told Joseph to flee to Egypt with his family. This subject however occupies only a small fraction of the painting. Rembrandt has decided to place more emphasis on recreating the mysterious atmosphere of a hilly landscape at night, illuminated by multiple light sources.
This work is one of nine painted landscapes by Rembrandt and it is the Dutch master’s one and only night scene. #RembrandtvanRijn
