If you’re not Black, please don’t chime in on “whether we should be supporting” Soul. It’s a Pixar movie with a Black lead. SUPPORT IT! Period. No, it’s not perfect, but we’ll never progress if we don’t support the presence of black leads in main stream films.
Not every movie with a Black lead has to be a teaching moment about the Black experience. Normalize Black people just existing in main stream media the way White people always have.
Just to be clear, the trope of body transformation of Black characters in animated films IS problematic. That’s what I meant by “it’s not perfect.” But I agree that it was a beautiful film with a beautiful story and portrayed Black characters in a very realistic and natural way.
For instance, the inclusion of that barber shop scene was EVERYTHING and was incredibly well-executed.
And also Joe is not a ghost for nearly as long as Tiana was a frog so I’m gonna go ahead and call that improvement.
