Good thread. One issue with ratio-ing is that each individual contribution is often justified (even salutary!). If someone says something kinda iffy, and one person replies "that's not a good take"--that's a perfectly fine response. Indeed, it's how you learn and grow. If 500 people flood the replies, it's traumatic and damaging even if their rhetoric is identical.
Of course, sometimes ratios are largely comprised of replies which, even in isolation, would be abusive or at the very least are not designed to help anyone grow. These raise their own questions. But the point is that individually-virtuous replies aren't enough to solve.
