I hope we can have an animated feature film with black folks in it without them transforming into blobs, cats, pigeons, or any other kind of creature. 
Oh yeah, and not removed from their bodies to be voiced by a white woman.
I’m really sad that I can’t just not see all of the stuff in the movie that didn’t sit well with me and just love it. I really wanted to. What makes matters worse is some of y’all dog piling on people with valid criticisms of the movie.
I don’t think y’all understand that it constantly feels like black people in animated films have to be packaged as some kind of creature to be marketable.
To execs, Black folks as we are, in our own skin aren’t “marketable” to them. The fact of the matter is, we are. Our lives, our stories and our experiences have value and are marketable.
Soul is a beautiful movie that has great moments but overall left me feeling more frustrated at all of the missed opportunities it had to really blow me away. I’m sorry if my opinion isn’t the expected one. You can drag me or whatever but it’s how I feel.
