The reason this bombing is so personal to me is because when I was a kid in the mid-late 70s my mom was a volunteer for Historic Nashville. Their office was HQ in the Silver Dollar Saloon which is the first building in the row on 2nd.
Back then, all of those buildings were crumbling. Complete rat traps. Dangerous. Depressing.
But hHistoric Nashville started to change all that. They fought valiantly to keep the buildings from being torn down. They saved The Ryman. They saved Union Station.
The Nashville you see today would not exist if it weren’t for those people working long thankless hours to preserve them. As a little kid, I did events to help raise awareness that this city’s past was worth preserving.
So, those are MY buildings.
Anyone who knows me knows I am and always have been passionate about Nashville.
While I am unhappy with some of its leadership, management and priorities and the rapid destruction of Music Row, I was proud to see downtown shine.
I was proud to see that those tender years I spent downtown weren’t wasted. They were the soul of Nashville now.
I pray it will be rebuilt as thoughtfully as possible.
Because it matters.
God Bless you, my city.
We will persevere.
