Bit of a ramble about Lampard that I wanna preface by saying I’m no master tactician or football expert, I observe what I see from Chelsea and other premier league clubs and move on with my life.
I know that his love for Mason Mount has been done to death but really, this 433 system that he’s devised doesn’t seem to benefit anyone but Mason Mount. So why continue with it at this moment? Players are playing out of position for no reason.
1) Kante. He doesn’t belong at the base of a midfield 3. He can’t move the ball well enough or dictate play from deep. Jorginho was brought in to do this but he lacks testosterone. He belongs in a midfield 2, like at Leicester and Conte’s Chelsea.
2) Havertz. No good for a 433. Not a number 8 or a winger. The only two positions he’s been shoehorned into this season. Add this to a move to a new country at a young age and COVID and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. Would be far better in a front 2 or as a number 10.
3) Werner. A striker playing as a winger for no reason. Like Havertz he’s playing far too deep and his confidence is shot. We’ve seen his touch has been bad and he’s too predictable but upfront he’s looked good and his shooting technique is exceptional.
Werner is picking up the ball in Hazard-like positions but it’s not his game. He shouldn’t be playing on the right or left, he should be playing on the right or left of a front 2. Maybe with Havertz? He belongs in and around the box where he can build confidence. He will score.
4) Kovacic. Only flashes of good attacking play have been when Ziyech is on the pitch. Should play from deep. Maybe in a midfield 2 with Kante? He has great talent but a midfield 3 has always highlighted his weaknesses.
And yeah a back 4 is a back 4 but the 433 with a STRIKER out wide doesn’t benefit the full backs. Werner wasn’t bought to come back and double up on opposition wingers was he?
This leads me to the conclusion that after shoehorning Mount in every system at every opportunity in positions he’s not well versed in (left wing in a 343???) Lampard has created a system for Mount and only for Mount.
The systems that would probably benefit us more from my very limited knowledge of tactics are the 442 (where he wouldn’t thrive) and a 4231 (where he can’t play in a pivot or as a number 10 as Havertz is the number 10). My shower thoughts have led to this. Thanks.
