Two Waifus Who are Too Perfect to Be the Best: A Thread on Mai Sakurajima and Chizuru Ichinose

<Minor Spoilers but i think i’ll be as a vague as possible>
Ok, so I’ll preface by saying the title is a little misleading. I don’t think negatively of either of these people. In fact, i absolutely adore both of them. Both are top 5 waifus ever for me. and i’m not attacking anyone who likes them either, so that’s not what i’m here
to do. Instead, i’d like to dive into what makes them such legitimately PERFECT girlfriends / waifus and why i think some of that appeal can reduce them to just being seen as characters.

First, I’ll start off with Chizuru. I believe chizuru is legitimately the PERFECT
girlfriend. From design to personality to interests to relationships, she’s someone who has it all down. Chizu even has her own dreams and goals she wants to accomplish. As Rent A Girlfriend progresses into its most recent arc, it has continually demonstrated that Chizu has had
struggles, too. Plenty of difficulty in her life she’s had to overcome. She’s ALWAYS painted in a positive light, and isn’t often shown to have too many flaws. Her only flaw is her negative mentality which restricts her from opening up and accepting help from others. However,
this problem is, I think, mostly shown to be a problem born of circumstance and not through any initial flaw within chizu herself.

Lets transfer to Mai for a bit now, too. Mai is also a PERFECT girlfriend. Her dynamic with Sakuta is palatable, her design is really nice, and
she has her own dreams and room to grow with you as a partner. In Bunny Girl Senpai, Mai’s conflict is also shown to be mostly internal, but once again, it’s mostly a product of situation.

Are you kind of beginning to see mai (my) point? I believe the authors of RAG and BGS
both would rather never paint their main heroines in a negative light from a human perspective. Sure they’ll have their mental challenges to break free of the shackles that have held them captive in their own social prisons, but the human side of them has rarely, if ever,
surfaced. neither of them have any flaws regarding their morality, responsibility, anything that could make them a REAL person. And that’s OK. not everyone wants someone who can hurt them, not everyone wants to feel the pain of a real relationship. Waifus are there to suspend
our disbelief in that we can have that kind of relationship where both sides can grow without too much pain. Take Kaguya for instance, I think I might have both Mai and Chizuru over Kaguya on a dream waifu list, but in reality, I think kaguya is the better character. She
feels more human, she has flaws and can hurt shirogane regardless of the situation or outside, uncontrollable forces. Mai and Chizuru aren’t human, they’re characters; they’re idols; they’re waifus. But that’s ok, because we need a break from reality every once in a while.
