Look, it's a rough day for German hockey fans...

We're absolutely crushed.

As good as it was to see our boys never give up even as they were ground under the heel of a giant, we're constantly exposed to just how much growth we need in player development.
I said it during last year's WJC:

We HAVE to take the good where we can find it.

Players like Draisaitl, Stützle, Peterka, Reichel, Grubauer, Sturm, Reider, Greiss, and Kahun all play under Germany's colours.

That HAS to be our takeaway...

Good or bad, we HAVE players...
And the ones who really impress the rest of the world, the ones non-Germans can tune into and really enjoy, THAT'S what we're working toward.

Yeah, it hurts to see them absolutely mauled the way they were tonight and yes, I cried about it but fuck me if there isn't hope...
Hope that the game I love will continue to grow in Germany.

And, as I said last year, I have experienced first-hand what a building full of German sports fans can bring to the sport of hockey.

And all it takes is a handful of our players to make it to the show.
They may continue their development in European leagues outside of Germany or with teams across North America, but giving them a chance to fall in love with the sport in their football loving homeland is where it all begins.

Today, we learned that we have a lot of growing to do
But we also learned that our boys don't quit.

We learned that the passion we have for sport doesn't begin with football and end with handball.

And as gutted as I am that this evening turned out the way it did, y'all are all talking about a German boy...
Impressed by a German boy, maybe even wishing he was YOUR German boy.

And just like with Draisaitl, that's where it all begins...

With one of our own, from a hometown like ours, who speaks our language (except for maybe the Bavarians) making it.
And just like I said last year, we don't expect to dominate... not just yet.

But one day, when our development program is all grown up and the Draisaitls and the Stützles aren't so few and far between, maybe y'all can learn to Ziggy Zaggy with us.
