I see some people saying male directors can survive a flop - they absolutely cannot. They most often go to “director jail” and have to do a small quirky film to recover if possible.
Also, these huge blockbusters are higher stakes. Speilberg’s 1941 still turned a profit.

ownership is a big part of it. When you have strong creative control and make risky decisions -
like taking the music out of Mulan, changing the source material is BoP or taking the action out of WW1984
- you HAVE to deliver a box office victory. Same for male directors.
