Thoughts on the current state of the #nashvillebombing investigation: The possibility that a person used a bomb to commit suicide while warning locals to evacuate to minimize any casualties upends the terrorism paradigm. If true, what was the bomber’s message?
Their motivation was clearly to commit suicide, if the human remains found are those of the bomber. But who was the target of the messaging, whatever it was? Corporate America, AT&T, the city of Nashville, or 1st responders? Did the bomber hold a specific grudge or animosity?
For those seeking to understand the why about events like this, all of the above is relevant. For others, like me, who seek to understand HOW a crime takes place in order to understand WHO may have committed it there is still a lot of investigation to take place.
Going forward the question about who will revolve around device forensics. What type of explosives. ANFO, black powder, military-grade, or TATP. How or where they were manufactured or acquired.
And finally, if the motive of the bomber was to commit suicide and not casualties, and there is no readily discernible target, messaging, or political objective, does it meet the strict definition of terrorism?
