1/ @david_perell's YouTube channel is a gold mine of valuable content for creators.

I struck gold when I discovered this Masterclass in Audience Building from @Apompliano himself.

Here are my key takeaways: 👇🏼
If don’t know Pomp already, he is an investor and a crypto educator and evangelist.

He writes a daily newsletter that has over 100K readers from the investing and business community. He also hosts a popular business podcast called the Pomp show.
On Twitter's power:

Pomp has built an audience of 300K on Twitter.

According to him, “Everything starts and ends with Twitter. It’s really a traffic engine to all the other products and platforms.”

Twitter is the central hub that drives traffic to all his other platforms.
On building an audience:

Pomp believes that In the future, those who build the audience will hold the power.

Pomp’s motto, “Audience is the new currency”.

He says that his entire growth is driven by these 5 words.
His Twitter Journey:

In 2017, Pomp had roughly 2000 followers on Twitter. He decided that he will focus on Twitter to build his audience.

He waited around 18 months to grow his audience on Twitter before he started his substack newsletter.

Later he launched the pomp podcast.
The Sequence was Intentional:

Pomp did not start with 5 platforms. He was intentional in focusing all his energy on one platform (Twitter)

He worked his ass off on Twitter to grow his follower base. More on that coming later down the thread...
He has some principles when it comes to Audience Growth.
First principle: Persistence Wins.

You don’t build an audience by chance. You have to put in the man-hours and energy behind the effort.

It’s gonna take a while before you hit your first 1000 or 10000 followers....
...When you keep persisting with the understanding that this will take time, you can continue to work on it.

Otherwise, it will become a frustrating experience.
Second Principle: Productize Yourself

He records five different video and audio assets and writes a daily email all in a single day.

Pomp says, “Why I’m willing to do it is basically break up my day, and I say every hour is something I can dedicate to a different product….
…And then what I try to do is optimize every single hour, how am I dedicating time to the production of an asset that then can be monetized later on.”

He thinks of his time as an investment just like a business views money as an investment.
Principle 3: Focus on one platform at a time.

Pomp had a razor-sharp focus on Twitter before he explored other platforms. He waited almost 2 years before starting his newsletter and podcast...
...In his words, “I’m gonna just do it until I feel really comfortable that I’m in my sleep, I could create content and grow on these platforms.”

If you are popular on one platform, you can push people from those platforms to your 2nd or 3rd platforms.
Principle 4: Create once, publish five times.

Once again, applying maximum leverage to his creative assets is his key strategy.

He transforms his podcasts and zoom calls into micro-content for other platforms....
...This way, he is able to maximize the value for his 1 hour of investment.

Keep in mind that he only started doing this after he had grown to a certain level within Twitter.
Principle 5: Obsess over your audience.

He is obsessed with engaging with his audience.

He literally likes every single comment and replied to over 90% of his followers who leave a comment....
...So much so that his haters even accused him of using bots to like the replies.

Pomp’s hard work paid off. People appreciated that they were being heard.

His engagement rates are proof of this.
Why being prolific with good enough quality is a good strategy:

Pomp previously ran the growth team at Facebook.

So he knows a thing or two about how the algorithms work...
...The algorithms are optimizing for the “number of pieces of content” not the number of people producing content.

Each extra piece of content is like an extra chance in the lottery pool.
Content creation is like working out in the gym:

You have to show up every day and put in the work until you can build that muscle memory.

You figure out hacks in your head and the structure for the routine.

It allows you to become good at creating good content in less time.
How Pomp grew his account?

This was the part that shocked me.

I always “assumed” that he was already a popular guy who had it easy on Twitter.

I was dead wrong. He worked his ass off to grow his Twitter account...
...Every hour, he would go read the top articles from news outlets, pull out insights, and tweet them.

He was tweeting 10-15 times every day.

He used all the feedback to figure out what kind of tweets work...
...His theory of more is better worked out for him on Twitter.

When it comes to audience engagement, no one could top Mr. Pomp.
Pomp's secret weapon:

Pomp loves what he does and this is probably an overlooked idea.

Unless you love what you do, it’s almost impossible to put this kind of hard work into creating content...
Pomp says, “I’m optimizing for doing the things I want to do, like, that’s why I have, I think the energy to do all of this is because I’m enjoying it, I don’t look at it as work.”
Format your tweets:

Pomp reminds us that you are creating this content for someone to consume.

So make it easy for them.

Add punctuations, add spaces in between the lines and overall keep it short and sweet....
Use lists.

According to Pomp, “Lists are super clear, here’s exactly what I’m saying, bang, bang, bang, here’s bullet points and like some call to action, people are likely to retweet that favorite it engages with it, whatever, it’s very digestible.”
Hijack Viral Accounts:

Pomp used to set notifications for Trump’s account and comment, “Hey, Trump, if you want to learn about Bitcoin, go subscribe to this email.”

It helped him drive a lot of impressions and used those impressions to drive attention to his own profile
Compress and distill before sharing:

People are not lazy, they are busy. He reminds us to save time for people is by making it easy for them to digest the content.

Instead of posting a link, extract the key insights, and share them via your own tweets.
