#Bridgerton is making me realize how much we've failed to educate folks on how rape happens to men. So just a few quick reminders:
Consent can be withdrawn at any point during a sexual activity ("Wait, wait" is definitely "no" during sex).
Consent to one sexuality activity is NOT consent to all sexual activities and you also need to have consent for the manner in which you engage in sexual activity with someone.
Birth control decisions absolutely have to be consented to.
Arousal or enjoyment of sexual activity on their own are NOT consent and don't override a no, hesitation, or the absence of clear consent (verbal or nonverbal)
It absolutely DOES NOT matter if a particular man can theoretically physically overpower a predator. There are such things as being caught off guard, being coerced, and social pressures and concerns around deciding not to physically overtake someone.
I know women in 2020 aren't going to argue that social pressure doesn't play a role in sex (and it is dubious in the case of Bridgerton, whether Simon who, as a black man, occupied a precarious role in the nobility and who saw himself as being in a love match with Daphne
would have felt comfortable overpowering her. There is also the fact, in this case, that Daphne walked into the encounter not communicating about it with him because she knew he wouldn't consent. It really hurts no one to communicate and be absolutely certain of consent.
And surely we have moved passed representing rape as if it is seduction or however else you interpret that scene.
