MATCH REVIEW: Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea. It's been a tough season so far. But hopefully, today's performance can be a catalyst. In this thread, I will analyse the formations/tactics, along with an in-depth review. Likes/RTs so more Gooners can see this would mean a lot to me, enjoy! 😁
FIRST HALF: Initially, it seemed that the hybrid 3-4-3 would be on show when looking at the players selected. But it quickly became clear that Arteta opted for a system that was reminiscent to the one pre lockdown, a 4-2-3-1 with Xhaka/Elneny playing in front of the two CBs.
Out of possession, the Gunners would shift into a 4-4-2/4-5-1. When Chelsea were within their own third, a 4-4-2 was utilised. As they moved forward, it became a 4-5-1, with the wide attackers supporting the two FBs, looking to prevent numerical superiorities. As Arsenal...
transitioned forward on the ball, Arteta clearly wanted his FBs to build offensive partnerships with the wide men, but with caution in a 2-3-5. When one overlapped, the other would drift infield/invert and help prevent transitions if possession was lost. Arsenal started...
with great intensity, and the energy Martinelli provided in particular certainly resonated across his fellow teammates. Chelsea were struggling to play out from the back, and this is down to the press deployed by the Gunners. Passing lanes eliminated, make life uncomfortable...
for the back four along with the GK, and force them to go long. These were the principles implemented, which played a huge part in why Chelsea looked ordinary in possession. Tierney, in particular, provided the team with a serious outlet. The partnership he/Gabi were developing..
was causing problems to James. Very early on, Bellerin's cross wasn't dealt with and Martinelli, by his high standards, should have done better. Chelsea grew into the game and developed much-needed between the 10th and 20th minute, with Mount rattling the bar with a great...
strike from a FK. Arsenal's tempo however increased, with ESR inches away from converting a great ball from Bellerin. But in the 32nd minute, the home side were rewarded with a penalty, won by the ever-present Tierney. Xhaka's pass is brilliant, and the Scottsman cleverly wins...
the spot-kick, which Arsenal's French No.9 goes onto convert. The Gunners go on to then double their lead in the 42nd minute. Saka brilliantly drives inside and draws the foul. But then it's all about Xhaka, who exquisitely riffles the FK into the net. A great half for Arteta!
SECOND HALF: A slight change out of possession after the interval was Martinelli playing up top with Laca.

2-0 is a dangerous scoreline in football, and the next goal was vital. Thankfully, it went to the home side. ESR, gliding between the lines, releases the hungry Saka...
who then showcases his quality and relaxes the nerves of all Gooners across the world. Chances continued to arise, with Martinelli testing the palms of Mendy, after great work from Tierney. Elneny, following a corner, had his attempt denied by the bar and Holding forced a...
a smart save. However, anxiety certainly started to develop in the 85th minute. CHO delivers the assist for Abraham, followed by, a tired Mari bringing the surprisingly quiet Mount down for a penalty. The spot-kick, however, was well saved by Arsenal's No.1 with the german...
preventing a very nervy ending.

Arteta resorted back to old principles system-wise, opted for profiles rather than forcing senior players into the 11, and it paid off. It's now down to the Gunners to use this as a catalyst and salvage what has been a very poor season so far.
INDIVIDUAL DISPLAYS: Surprisingly Leno didn't have much to do. But when called upon, he shone through. His quality on the ball has improved and looks a lot more assured. Made some crucial claims and his penalty save was a key moment. Top performance. Holding, playing at RCB,...
had arguably his best performance of the season. Commanding, showed excellent defensive awareness on a number of occasions and maintained concentration levels. A few loose passes, but a convincing display. His partner Mari also impressed. Playing with a yellow card for the...
majority of the game, he showed maturity, making some vital interceptions/blocks. A sloppy penalty was given away and fatigue may have been the cause for this. But analysing his overall performance, it was encouraging. Bellerin who has received his fair share of critics didn't...
disappoint. The Spaniard showed his quality going forward but also made some crucial defensive headers to ease pressure. Werner was quiet and he deserves a lot of praise for this. Whilst HB did give the ball away cheaply at times, it was a performance that deserves recognition.
His partner on the opposite flank was the flying Scottsman, Tierney who was simply outstanding. Playing as an out and out LB, he provided great width and endeavour going forward. Some great crosses, a vital penalty won and provided defensive assurance. CHO did give him problems..
after the interval but nevertheless a fantastic display. Xhaka was also brilliant. His qualities revolve around passing, and the clear change in this game was that the Swiss international operated more centrally, rather than predominantly hovering around the left. This opened...
up more passing options for him, with ESR giving him an option between the lines. Great pass in the build-up to the penalty won, a rocket of a FK and showed good defensive discipline. Elneny also had a good game, complimenting Granit and minimised his defensive responsibilities.
ESR given the chance to showcase his talent, worked extremely hard, as shown statistically. On the ball, the youngster showed how to operate in central areas, and open up space for others. His productivity continued with an assist for Saka. On the left was the lively Martinelli.
A player who has been sorely missed and in his first start in the PL, he didn't disappoint. Continuously hunting opposing players down, work rate was immense and the only criticism is that he could have done better in a few instances, by his incredibly high standards.
Saka, playing as an inside forward on the right, was a standout. Similar levels of work rate to Gabi, but showed great quality on the ball. So intelligent in that he knows when to pass and when to hold onto the ball. His strike in was sensational. Leading the line was Laca.
Effective when he dropped deep, sharper hold up play, and was continuously bringing others into the game, which helped kickstart opportunities to transition forward. Silva/Zouma made it difficult for the Frenchman, but he kept going, showed fight and converted a crucial penalty.
