A thread on #Erasmus

- Erasmus participation needs to be looked at objectively
- 3 of the top 5 destinations for UK students studying abroad - US, Australia, Canada are neither in the EU nor Erasmus
- more UK students go to the US and Australia than the rest of the EU combined
- More than twice as many EU students flock to the UK under the Erasmus program than the other way round
- language proficiency is the reason. English is the world’s international language, and thus by far the most popular choice for a second language for non-native speakers
- unsurprisingly the UK students tend not to prioritise learning a second language and head to the US, Canada, Australia in large numbers for I suspect a "better" degree than jolly trip on the continent
- £100m Turing program that targets global students is good move by the UK
- Erasmus is made out by Remainers as EU is "paying" the UK. No, it's UK's money just like the EU budget.
- UK pays £200 million/ year for Erasmus
- 15,000 UK studying at university in the EU ie £13K for each for them
- the tuition fee here in the UK is £9k..
so not a good sum
With the EU it's always about "redistribution".
Erasmus creates and sustains bureaucracy and gravy train in education

Erasmus breeds both "wheat" and the "chaff". I suspect a lot of latter

The "Wheat" will still get to their programs here in the UK or in the EU, Erasmus or not
UK's students should be heading to broader world to study at the best schools and the brightest from the EU and outside the EU should be enticed to the UK

Turing program with £100 million of funding which no doubt will keep increasing achieves both goals
#Erasmus #Turing
